It has been a mixed transfer window for Tottenham so far. We have done well to clear some of the players who had no part going forward in the squad. Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic’s contracts officially ended this summer, and we have also said goodbye to Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga, Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Emerson Royal on a permanent basis. Bryan Gil, Alejo Veliz and Dane Scarlett have all left the club on loan to Girona, Espanyol and Oxford United respectively.
We still have outgoings to perform, with the likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon still on the books at Tottenham despite not featuring in any of the friendlies over the past month. Manor Solomon and Oliver Skipp have also been linked to moves away in order to get more gametime. Richarlison looked set to leave earlier in the window however he looks set to stay now as he does not want to leave. The Brazilian striker took to Instagram to post the message “I am at home” with a photo of him scoring a goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
In terms of incomings, we have signed Archie Gray from Leeds for 40 million, and he has looked like a promising, versatile player throughout pre-season having featured at centre-back, central midfield and at right back and looking relatively comfortable in all 3 roles. Reports suggest that Gray will mainly be the backup to Pedro Porro this season, but in his future at the club they see him as a centre mid. Regardless, his versatility will help. Tottenham signed Lucas Bergvall back in January and he linked up with the squad this summer, and he is another promising youngster who has put in good, tenacious performances in pre-season including registering an assist for fellow Swede Dejan Kulusevski at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Bayern Munich last week. We have finally signed a striker, and it’s Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth and it will be exciting to see if he can better the 19 league goals he scored last season. He will provide good competition with Richarlison for the starting role. Korean winger Yang Min-Hyeok has been signed and loaned back to Gangwon FC in the K-League, but he played against Tottenham for the K-League all stars and spun past Emerson Royal who has since departed for AC Milan.
Tottenham still have work to do in the incomings department and a left-back, central midfielder and a winger should still all be on the lost. I highly doubt we will get every position we need. Djed Spence and Ben Davies can provide LB cover and in midfield we still currently have Bissouma, Bentancur, Gray, Bergvall, Skipp, Sarr and Maddison as well as promising academy players in George Abbott and Tyrese Hall so there are options, especially against the weaker sides in the Europa League to include some youth players. In the same way, striker Will Lankshear and winger Mikey Moore could be used to boost the attack after impressing and scoring in pre-season.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the remainder of Tottenham’s transfer window, and if the opening performances cause us to go down a different route, but as of now it has been a mixed window with some good incomings and some needed outgoings, but more does need to be done.
