It’s Timo Time!

Timo Werner signed for Tottenham Hotspur on loan from RB Leipzig in the January transfer window, with an option to buy for just £15 million. Werner has looked bright in moments for Spurs and has been making positive runs attempting to use his pace to get the better of opposition defences. On his debut – away at Old Trafford – Timo registered an assist for Bentancur’s equalising goal just a minute into the second half. He made positive runs down the left-hand side in the absence of Son, who was away at the Asian Cup with South Korea. Unfortunately, these runs were not picked up often enough, as Udogie and the midfield that day of Hojbjerg, Bentancur and Skipp lacked the creativity to find him, Richarlison and Brennan Johnson on many occasions. Having James Maddison fit for that game, and it could have been a different story. However, Werner was found a few times on the left-hand side and dribbled with the ball before finding Bentancur in space to guide home a composed finish.

Werner’s next start arrived in a huge FA Cup clash against Manchester City, where Spurs were unfortunate to lose to a dodgy Nathan Ake late goal. But Werner’s performance again was bright, where he was making intelligent runs all game to no avail as he was barely found. His footballing IQ was there for anyone to see, and he would have posed City real problems even if found on two or three occasions. Werner has looked a danger in every game, with a few good chances, goals and assists he has picked up now. He registered his second Spurs assist against Brentford as his pinpoint cross was met by Brennan Johnson to complete a comeback from 1-0 down in two consecutive minutes.

Timo started against Crystal Palace after a cameo off the bench against Wolves due to the injury of Richarlison. Werner made a positive attacking run which Heung-Min Son perfectly picked out, however Werner had too much time on his hands and missed a simple chance, trying to round the keeper one on one. Werner has been known for missing many big chances for his days at Chelsea and you would have understood him losing confidence from this moment, however he picked himself up and kept going and finally scored in the second half to equalise the game, finishing off a Brennan Johnson cross at the back post.

Timo Werner is a smart player when he does not have too much time to think, and with Tottenham having an option for £15 million to sign him permanently it would not be surprising to see him in a Tottenham kit again next season. There will not be any better options for that price tag for Tottenham to explore.
