The fall and rise of Stockport County F.C

The last 30 years for Stockport have been some of the best years of the club yet also some of the worst spells the club has ever seen

From the highs of promotion to the league now known as the Championship in the 1996/1997 season to relegation to the now known National League North in the 2012/13 season and with the club on the verge of returning to league one for the first time in 15 season. I’ll be looking through the highs and the lows of the past 30 years.

The whole decade of the 1990s were home to some of the best in the clubs history reaching the 2nd tier of English football in the 96/97 season and staying there for four seasons before being relegated in the fifth season of that level in the 01/02 season. Where county were in and out of the 3rd and 4th tier until 2011/12 when the club were relegated down to the conference 5th tier of England  where they only lasted 2 seasons before dropping to the 6th tier which was some of the lowest times in the clubs history.

Throughout the non league years Stockport improved theyre league position improved every year from 14th to 11th to 9th to 8th to 5th and then won the league in the 6th season.

Then Stockport has to deal with the effects of Covid during the end of the 19/20 season and early 20/21 season but still managed to get promoted in their second season back in the 5th tier of English football.

In there first season back in the football league they managed to make it to fourth of the league and lost out on back to back promotion at Wembley in the playoff final losing out to Carlisle on penalty’s.

As they lead the league with five games left to go and only need 6 points to win the league will they return to the highs of league one.

Will Ben Hinchliffe become the first player ever to win the 6th,5th and 4th tier trophy with the same club.
